Another social justice in the SH fandom post.
If you are not located in an English speaking country, you might have seen that some official pages make posts in the language of your country (some of them might also go in the English version, some might not).
This is the case of the official Silent Hill page on Facebook.
You know, as an artist myself, I believe it is highly, extremely disrespectful to post art or photography that does NOT belong to you, without specifying a source. It is not hard, and nowadays with Google Images, most pictures can be sourced.
In many occassions I have seen how the Spanish SH FB page has posted the same content as the English version (I say it again, it is the SAME page, but with language specific posts), such as fanart or cosplay… but without a source. And when you claim for a source, and EVEN give it to them, you get blatantly ignored.
This is not the case with the English posts; they always source and if they don’t, you ask them for it, they reply to you and modify the post with the source.
This has been my experience.
And now this screenshot is from a Spanish post where I talked about this. A lot of people (over 170 likes so far) agreed with me, however a few ones have been mysoginist, sexist bastards agaisnt me. 6 guys blatantly trying to flirt with me, trying to add me to friends, another guys wishing they were older just to be able to flirt with me, another few calling me moron, idiot or even old lady (if 27 years old is old for you, I’ve got news for you… you are a fucking brat). Some people saying I “overreacted” while others just using memes badly agaisnt me (calling me sandy vagina). One guy asked if I starred in porn films and another two told me to “unfollow” the page if it bothered me so much (again, it is the same page as the English one). And lastly, some funny guy said I was being too selfish.
My point is, it is terrible to post cosplay pictures, fanart, whatever you call it without a source. It is UNFORGIVABLE for an OFFICIAL page to do this, because upon seeing this, people will believe it is ok and they will never source anything.
Kids, source everything. Don’t come with the “but I don’t know where it’s from” bullshit. Because with Google Images, you will get a source, generally a DeviantArt page.
And this is why it is so important: in the world of art it is extremely difficult to make a living out of your work. You can only charge expensive quotes when you’ve got a “name”. This is, becoming somewhat popular. And this is done by having your stuff properly credited and sourced when others post it.
So if you like a picture so much you want to share it, please give credit to the artist because this way you will be helping them.
